When it comes to achievements, the question of how much is hard work and how much is luck inspires great debates. It has been my experience that it takes 90% hard work and 10% luck. If you asked most successful people they would tell you that it was hard work. Sure, some people seem to get a long ways on luck, but does it just appear on the outside as all luck?
You can't beat hard work, especially for long term achievement. Luck may get you some achievements but hard work will provide you with sustainability and growth, all necessary for achievement in any aspect of life.
The hard work required for achieving a goal has a lot to do with commitment and persistence. If you are committed 100% and you are truly dedicating your life to this goal and passionate about it, you've already made it. If you have doubts, and are not sure about your path and which directions to go, you have a bumpy road ahead. The work becomes harder and feels more like hard labor.
If you are persistent you've already won, as well. This means being persistent in the face of mistakes, rejection, and criticism. It also means that no matter how much people say you can't do it, or it will never work; you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and move on to the next steps.
It is important to learn from the experiences because every experience contains valuable lessons. Some lessons, believe me, you will not want to repeat in the future. So, make sure you think about what the lesson is and how you will apply it in future situations like that.
Persistence means going beyond the traditional definition. I had no idea how persistent I could be until I chose to be more committed. The commitment seemed to inspire the persistence. This re-energized the goal and got me moving forward. Suddenly I am taking bolder steps than I ever imagined I could.
When you work hard for a goal, believe me it is far more satisfying, joyful and will keep a smile on your face for a long time. When luck shows up to help things fall into place, jut say "thank you."
